National climbing gym chain to open new facility in the Design District

There’s a new rock climbing gym in town, and it’s opening doors this weekend for new and experienced climbers in the heart of Dallas’ trendy and sleek Design District.

National climbing chain Movement is opening its 2nd location in Dallas and 20th location in the U.S. As the sport has gained popularity locally and across the world, this gym is joining about a dozen climbing gyms in the D-FW area, which includes Summit and Oso.

The climbing group’s first center opened in The Hill Shopping Center last October on the north east corner of N. Central Expressway and Walnut Hill Lane.

Situated among several art galleries and upscale furniture showrooms, Movement’s new facility at 141 Glass Street is a two-floor building, with some climbing walls on the first floor stretching as high as 56 feet. The new facility spans 45,000 square feet, which is roughly equivalent to the size of three Trade Joe’s.

“We’re excited to be a part of the metroplex and a place where people can come and recreate and have a great time,” Movement CEO Jeremy Levitt said.

Levitt was born and raised in Dallas and started climbing at a young age in the city, noting the sport is a “long standing tradition” in the area. As a former member of the Dallas climbing community, Levitt said there has been a strong climbing presence in the area since the 2000s.

The climbing network has locations in Oregon, California and Colorado, and Movement members are able to access gyms located across the country. Dallas members can soon take advantage of both facilities in the Design District and the Hill, which are less than 15 miles apart.

The newest Movement location will include top rope and lead climbing on top of bouldering — a form of climbing that does not involve ropes.
